Essential Oil Education

Y’all know I love all things natural. We all know that all things created by nature are not inherently good for us or without its caveats. 🌿

Poison ivy is natural, but all kids that grew up in the country know the pain and nasty rash it can cause. 🌿

Such is the case with essential oils. Here are just a few to keep in mind: Some essentials oils (i.e lemon, lime, grapefruit, or orange) can become phototoxic when used in the sun. This skin irritation may occur when using citrus essential oils in the sun. 🌿

Essential oils can be poisonous when not used correctly. For example, eucalyptus oil causes a soothing sensation when inhaled, however, if swallowed can cause seizures. Even the using the wrong species has varying effects. 🌿

YOU MUST dilute essential oils to prevent adverse reactions. The easiest way to achieve this is research the ratio for that particular species and add to a compatible carrier oil. If it is your first time using it, do a patch test to observe for reactions. There are some exceptions and some can be delivered directly to skin ( i.e. lavender, chamomile). 🌿

With any product you should always research for any contraindications for use during pregnancy or any health conditions. To name a few; birch, clary sage, fennel, cinnamon, mugwort, sage, clove, rosemary). These oils could cause contractions or have adverse effects on the baby. This is not exhaustive; you should seek advise of your medical provider. 🌿

Dilution rates. Dilution rates. Dilution rates. It not only matters when using for skin, aromatherapy, ingestion, but also for children. Essential oil rates are not the same for adults. After the age of 2, it is generally safe to use essential oils , but a lower concentration rate. And research HOW to use them. Peppermint and eucalyptus should not be used topically on younger children (less than 10). This is not exhaustive, I hope this helps you along your journey to using natural products, safely.
